The EU STARS project (Strengthening Training of Academia in Regulatory Science) is a new EU funded initiative. The three-year project will be coordinated by the two German regulatory authorities – the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices, BfArM and the Paul-Ehrlich Institute, PEI. The consortium comprises authorities from 18 European countries and is funded by the European Commission with around EUR 2 million.

The STARS project aims to improve the regulatory knowledge and awareness of academic health researchers and enhance regulatory scientific advice. In accordance with the aims a Comprehensive Inventory about the existing support activities for regulatory scientific advice, a Common Strategy for the partners of the STARS project with concrete actions connected to professional education will be issued. Through three pilots the project will demonstrate that the selected support activities can be implemented efficiently via the methodical approach proposed by STARS.

The project consists of six Work Packages (WP) and the OGYEI contributes to four of them (WP2, WP3, WP4, WP5)

  • WP1 – Coordination and project management (Germany)
  • WP2 - Establishment of the Comprehensive Inventory of existing support activities for regulatory Scientific Advice and Protocol Assistance in Europe (Finland)
  • WP3 – Effectiveness analysis and development of the Common Strategy (Italy)
  • WP4 – Implementation of the STARS pilots (Spain)
  • WP5 – Additional mechanisms to support academic groups (Netherlands)
  • WP6 – Communication-dissemination (Germany)
